Mirror Field Studio

A three-month experimental studio investigation into sound, image and frequency, conducted in mentorship with composer and sound artist Liberty (E.B. Kerr) in a temporary shopfront studio on Narooma's main street. Supported by Create NSW and the Regional Arts Fund.

The Narooma studio was a particular kind of container: a mirrored exterior reflecting the street back on itself, paper-thin walls, the ocean visible in the distance — and with these, the sensation of working in public while investigating the invisible. What I discovered is that self-consciousness — the discomfort of being seen mid-process, of having no conclusions to offer — is not an obstacle to the work. It is material.

The investigation took several forms: extended observation using camera and recording devices; writing Field Notes as a primary medium; improvisational studio sessions across sound, image, and text; and the making of ephemera — pamphlets, loose-leaf publications — that function as artworks rather than documentation. These are not activities in service of a predetermined outcome. They are the work.

Field Notes emerged through the mentorship as my most important current medium. The writing is where the not-arriving becomes a form of arriving — where the investigation finds its record not as conclusion but as proposition.

A library of printed essays, artist texts, and contributed materials emerged as interface between the investigation and the wider community.

The project culminated in Unfinished Songs and Pictures, an exhibition and performance event in Narooma (June 2026).
